Yesterday it was widely reported that President Donald Trump sidestepped his own party for the second time this month and made a deal with Congressional Democrats to legalize DACA recipients. This morning, he is already backtracking.
According to the Twitterrer-in-Chief, no deal was made, and if one was made, it was in exchange for “massive border security,” and only if Congress agrees to it. If that sounds confusing and contradictory, you are reading it correctly. As we reported earlier this week, we were skeptical Trump had any intention to legalize DACA recipients in any way, and we see no reason to change that.
We speculated that the walk back had to do with his base exploding in anger, and very shortly after the story came out, The Hill confirmed it.
Tea party darling and frequent racist tirade maker Congressman Steven King of Iowa tweeted: “If [the story] is correct, Trump base is blown up, destroyed, irreparable, and disillusioned beyond repair. No promise is credible.” Right wing talk show host Laura Ingrhaam tweeted, “ONLY deal that MIGHT make sense for #DACA is RAISE Act + E-Verify + Wall. Dems’ “Border security” pledge is MEANINGLESS.” White House Frenemy and former Chief Strategist Steve Bannon crowed in Breitbart: ““Dems declare victory as Trump caves on DACA,” Lastly, Sean Hannity warned that “if @POTUS doesn’t keep that promise, and goes for amnesty, it will be the political equivalent or “read my lips, no new taxes.”
If something is too good to be true, it usually is, the old saying goes. For the likes of Trump who promised “everything” to his rural white base, only to propose gutting Medicaid which covers a large portion of those voters to the tune of $800 billion, one must be twice as careful.
